Simply Carolina: The Best of Winston – Salem

Recently, Southern Living magazine made a shout-out to my hometown, Winston-Salem, NC. The article, titled “10 Things You’re Missing If You Haven’t Been to Winston-Salem,” lists 10 things you are missing when you come to the Camel City.

As a native of Winston-Salem, I’ve decided to take the list and chose my top 5 favorite things. (And yes, this was very difficult to do.)

Classic Bakery – Dewey’s Bakery

Serious Chocolate – Black Mountain Chocolate

Vineyards and Wineries – Sanders Ridge, Raffaldini Vineyeards & Winery, and Childress Vineyards

Swank Historic Hotel – The Kimpton Cardinal

The Art House that R.J. Built – Reynolda House Museum of Art

Simply Carolina

North Carolina and South Carolina are two of my favorite states. As a traveler and lover of history, I always like to learn about the places I’m visiting. For this week’s Simply Carolina, here are five quick facts about each state. Did you know the Carolinas originated as one colony?

North Carolina:

  1. State nicknames include the “Tarheel State” and the “Old North State.”
  2. Krispy Kreme Doughnuts was founded in Winston-Salem.
  3. Babe Ruth hit his first home run in Fayetteville on March 7, 1914.
  4. North Carolina is the nation’s leader in furniture, tobacco, brick, and textile production.
  5. The state’s motto is: Esse quam videri, meaning to be rather than to seem.

South Carolina:

  1. The state dance of South Carolina is the shag.
  2. The Palmetto state is leading the nation in peach production and shipper east of the Mississippi River.
  3. South Carolina entered the Union as the 8th state on May 23, 1788.
  4. The Civil War started at Fort Sumter.
  5. Duncan Park Baseball Stadium in Spartanburg is the oldest minor league stadium in the nation.

My Tarheel Food Must-Tries

logo

It’s almost time to reveal a fun and exciting project I’ve been working on! The project, Simply Carolina, will feature stories, recipes, and cities related to North and South Carolina.  For a little preview, here are the must-try restaurants in the Tarheel state.

Put food and travel together and I’m a happy camper! So, when I saw an article titled, “15 Restaurants In North Carolina That Will Blow The Taste Buds Out of Your Mouth,” I knew I had to read it.

Out of the 15 restaurants mentioned, I made a 5 must-try bucket list.

1:Darryl’s Wood Fired Grill in Greensboro: Who doesn’t love BBQ with a signature sauce?
2: Hurricane Mo’s in Kitty Hawk: Dine on a meal of shrimp, wings, and tacos with a great view of the Outer Banks.
3: Dame’s Chicken and Waffles in Durham: Chicken and waffles, does anything get more Southern?
4: Johnny’s Pizza in Apex: You can’t keep me away for a good slice of pizza for too long!
5: The Cowfish in Charlotte: Where else can you get burgers and sushi at the same place?

Insider’s Guide to Boone, N.C.

The last stop on my Southern Summer roadtrip is right here in my home state! Plan your trip to the picturesque town of Boone with my tips.

Things to Do:

  1. Tweetsie Railroad
  2. Blue Ridge Parkway
  3. Mast General Store
  4. Appalachian Ski Mountain
  5. Howard Knob

Restaurants to Try:

  1. Coyote Kitchen
  2. Proper
  3. Daniel Boone Inn
  4. Hob Nob Farm Cafe
  5. Our Daily Bread

Tips to Use:

  1. Take a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway, but make sure you go during the Fall or Spring when the color is the best.
  2. Spend a little time in the nearby cities, such as Blowing Rock and Banner Elk.
  3. Looking for a ski vacation? Make sure to book early.
  4. Boone is a college town, so you might want to plan around Appalachian State University’s home football schedule.
  5. Stay in a small, quiet hotel within the city instead of a big chain hotel. You’ll get the most out of your vacation in a great setting.

Let’s Go!

travel profile

Welcome!

Thank you for visiting my blog, The Adventures of a 20-Something Traveler! I’m Megan, a 20-something year old, with a love for travel, history, and excitement. Born in Texas, I have called North Carolina my home for over 20 years (my family moved from the Lonestar state when I was two months old). Quickly, the Tarheel state became one of my favorites and has the best of both worlds. Its beaches, big and small cities, and mountains are all within a short distance of each another.

My love for travel started at an early age. Annual vacations were a must growing up. Today, my travels have expanded into several trips and adventures per year. Some favorite destinations are: Charleston, SC, New York City, and anywhere in Texas. No matter what, though, my heart will always be at the beach.

My goal for this blog is to share my love of travel through tips, advice, vacation ideas, and much more. Stay tuned for a post about travel tips that can take the hassle out of any vacation, coming later this week!
