Ellis Island Untold

On my last trip to New York City, I visited Ellis Island for the first time. I could spend a week there, learning about all the information and absorbing everything this historic landmark holds inside. But, some of the facts are left untold, until now…

  1. Immigrants had to answer 29 questions to gain citizenship. Approximately 2 percent of all immigrants failed due to criminal records, disease, or other responses.
  2. The station dining room could house about 1,000 people at once.
  3. The remains of 6 Native Americans were removed from Ellis and Liberty Islands, but have since been returned by the National Park Services.
  4. The immigration station processed its last immigrants on November 12, 1954.
  5. As immigration slowed during World War I, the island was used as a way-station for the Army and Navy.
